The Master List was created and maintained by Lewis S. Eisen, and widely cited by Usenet administrators, documentation sites, and authors explaining Usenet structure and hierarchy governance.
The project began as a Usenet-distributed document, with version 1.0 first released on 25 September 1995. Early versions were maintained and circulated exclusively in Usenet format. The list later transitioned to a parallel web-hosted version at magma.ca, beginning with version 5.42 in 1999, while continuing to be distributed via Usenet.
For historical accuracy, this page provides access to an unchanged archival reproduction of the original web version, together with the authoritative Internet Archive snapshot.

The Master List of Newsgroup Hierarchies was authored and maintained by Lewis S. Eisen.
During the period in which the list was actively maintained, postings to certain moderated Usenet groups required distribution by authorized posters. Those distribution mechanics did not affect authorship, editorial control, or versioning of the document.
